The Friday Five

FIVE LINES FOR EVERY ST. VLADIMIRIAN TO READ TO PREPARE FOR THE WEEKEND!

ONE: ANNUAL MEETING THIS SUNDAY! THERE IS HOMEWORK!
Each year on the Sunday of the Last Judgment we hold our annual parish meeting. That means that THIS SUNDAY we have the opportunity to come together as a parish family, hear reports from various members of our parish that head specific ministries, to celebrate our victories of the past year, and to share ideas about how we can improve in the coming year. Annual Meetings can be terribly long and rather unpleasant - but that is not what we are after! Rather, we ask you to do some homework so the meetings can be as focused and useful as possible. In this vein, we ask everyone to review ALL the materials found at this link BEFORE we meet on Sunday during our Annual Blini Dinner. These reports will not be read at the meeting, but rather, we will field questions on the reports. At this link you can find information about how to ask questions before the meeting, and how to make other suggestions to improve our parish:

Finishing the School, Starting the New Church & Hall, YOUR PART!

Dear Friends,

Thank God, after years of labor, donations, struggles, prayer, and action we have come to a truly crucial point in the life of our parish, that is, the opening of our parish school! Yes, we have been holding classes for two years already, utilizing our parish church several times per week, and with the young people studying at home with parents and on-line several times per week. We have been serving the Divine Liturgy every Wednesday that school is in session for nearly two years. And through the prayers, hard work, and other support of our parish family and the friends of our Ann Arbor Orthodox Classical Academy we are ready to open enrollment for the 2024-25 school year! And we have been able to lower our tuition to $500 per month – A HUGE BIG DEAL!

a2oca.org

Such good news! Surely this means we are done with this project! But on the contrary, one of our biggest temptations as Orthodox people is to get things done about 95% and then stop. At least for me. You might not have that temptation. But the reality is, we need to not only get close to winning the game, we need to play right until the last second ticks off the clock. We need to REDOUBLE our efforts now that we are in view of victory!

In other words, now is NOT THE TIME to rest on our laurels and admire the good job we have done. Rather, now is the time to push, to make sure that we don’t just build a school, but to make sure that the school is successful by ever metric we can measure, not the least of these being a robust enrollment when we open the doors in the September of 2024.

But how can you help at this late date? How can you make sure that we run the race right until we cross that finish line? I am calling upon all our parish family – EVERY SINGLE MAN, WOMAN, AND CHILD – to pray every day for the success of our school, beginning on Monday, February 12 (the feast of the Three Hierarchs – the patron saints of education!) until December 12 (the feast of the patron saint of our school, St. Mardarije of Ann Arbor). Let us all, at 8:00 p.m. every night, say the prayer that the Lord taught His disciples: The Lord’s Prayer. And let us concentrate especially on the words: “...Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven…”, for we believe that indeed we are doing the Lord’s will by investing in the education of the next generation of Orthodox Christians who have found themselves living in a secular humanist world that is diametrically opposed to Christianity. And we are encouraged in our confidence that this is the Lord’s will by the words of Archbishop Peter’s Nativity Epistle. We also encourage your entreating St. Mardarije for his prayers before the Lord. And for this reason we will have the relics of St. Mardarije available for veneration of our St. Vladimir’s faithful every Saturday evening and Sunday morning beginning this Saturday, February 10.

Who among us cannot join this prayerful labor? And if your child does not know this prayer yet, let us use this opportunity to teach it to him. And if you desire to know this prayer in Church Slavonic, let us take this opportunity to learn the prayer in Church Slavonic. If we all pray for the Lord’s will to be done we can be confident in His blessing. For He said: “... where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20) Moreover, He assured us: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” (Luke 11:9) And if we all pray together each evening we are talking about hundreds seeking, asking, and knocking together. Let us encourage our friends and loved ones to join us in this effort as well, entreating the Lord for His blessing on our school!

Above I write that we are investing in the school. And I think it is crucial that we see our efforts towards our school as an investment indeed. Not just and investment in the children and families that will benefit from the school, but in our entire parish, our state, our nation. In other words, yes we should thank God that we can plan and execute the building of the first Orthodox parish school in Michigan, but this is not just abject altruism. On the contrary, the children and families that will benefit from our school will also benefit our parish. It is these children and families that will grow into the leaders of our parish, and it is through the growth in the parish that the school will drive the successfully complete (with God’s blessing) the next project for our parish family: the building of our new church and hall. The school will drive growth. The school will educate children. The school will bring new converts. The school will make it possible to continue to bring new people to Christ, and to continue to outgrow our present parish church, which honestly, we outgrew some years ago.

We announce here for the entire parish family to know: we are actively negotiating with Lima Township on the date of the groundbreaking for our new church! The school therefore is not the END of a project, it is the FIRST STEP in the greater building plan of our parish, and construction of the new church and hall will, barring any really unforeseen circumstances, start this year if the Lord 2024!

Therefore, I hope that we all see that we are not entering a time of rest, but having completed our parish school as a base for continued growth, we will be REDOUBLING our efforts as a parish family and building our new church and hall, using the success of our school as a jumping off point and a proof of concept. We built the school with our efforts and God’s blessing – we can do the same with our new church and hall!

And so brothers and sisters, let us thank God for the challenges He gives us. For if He gives a challenge He also gives the strength to bear it, and the grace to spiritually grow from it. Working together with Him, and through the prayers of our Sts. Vladimir and Mardarije let us not turn back, but reengage in our parish family’s effort to complete the school strongly, and push right through to the next big project of our new church and hall! If we add our time, talent, and treasure to our sincere prayer, and from that prayer we receive the Lord’s blessing on our labor, THERE IS NOTHING WE CANNOT ACCOMPLISH AS A PARISH FAMILY!

Join us in prayer! Join us in labor! Join us to win the victory for the Lord’s Church and for all those that will know Him and be saved by Him through our humble and sincere efforts!

Asking Your Prayers,

Fr. Gregory

FIVE: PRAYERS AFTER MEALS – please begin to use this prayer at home so that when we finish our meals at STV the priest is not singing a solo. :) Everyone should know this short prayer because everyone should be using it after each meal they partake of every day. For most people that is 3 times a day, or 1095 times per year. If one partakes of Holy Communion every Sunday then we could remove 52 of those prayers (since we don't have breakfast before Communion), bringing us to 1043 times per year. I am confident that after less than a year everyone will know these prayers as well as we all know “Our Father” and we will boom out our thanksgiving to God every Sunday after our meal! Let us strive to make it so!

FOR THE FUTURE: We need more catechists to assist our priests in preparing inquirers to become Catechumens and eventually: Orthodox Christians. Training is available. Please contact one of our priests to learn more!

See you soon at STV!

Taking Steps Towards Spiritual Health at STV

Friends,

We are still working out our Quarter 3 financials for this year and those will be published soon. This is always a complicated quarter due to the festival. But it is clear that although I – Fr. Gregory – like that report, and we will continue to produce it to help compare trends over time, the message there is not reaching everyone. We need your help to figure this out, and I encourage you to reach out to me, our Treasurer Mikhail Fisenkov (treasurer@stvladimiraami.org), or any one of our Parish Council members with your advice in this regard. As always, we are certain we have a solution in our parish family to this important question, but that solution is in someone’s head (maybe several someones), and if you don’t share it then it can’t help anyone. :)

The problem that we need a solution to here is one of spiritual health of our parish family. If one person is spiritually ill then we all are effected by that, and if lots of folks are spiritually ill (as seems to be the case here), then we are not a very healthy family at all, and that needs to be addressed and rectified. Of course, there are various ways to measure the health of a parish family. By most metrics we are super strong: number of people in church, number of people partaking of Holy Communion, number of Divine Services, number of clergy in the parish, quality of our choir, numbers in our Brotherhood and Sisterhood and their service to the faithful, number of adult members in the parish, number of inquirers and catechumens. In all these we are strong. But as we grow in numbers, Divine Services, and all other metrics, our overall giving continues to … drop. We are cutting costs wherever we can. But if our income continues to drop it will not be long (a few months probably) before we will have to make some changes that the parish family will really feel. Not as a punishment, but because we won’t be able to afford to pay our clergy, choir directors, etc., and they’ll have to work more outside the parish and be less available for us and to fulfill their ministries.

Obviously the drop in income is due to the uncertain economic and political situation in which we live today. But we are called to live in the world, and to raise the world to a higher level by our example. We are called to live in the world, but not be consumed by the world. We are called to be pilgrims on this earth, not tie ourselves to the earth, because this is not our true homeland – our true homeland is in the Heavenly Kingdom. Those are nice words to say and to read, but Christianity only works if we live it – not just say the words. St. Gregory the Theologian put it well: “Grace is given not to them who speak their faith, but to those who live their faith.”

So how do we live our faith? Look at those metrics above – we are doing wonderfully by most any measure. But the Lord calls us to yet a higher level of sacrifice:

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)

In other words, we have do more than the external things. The external things are important – but they are not EVERYTHING. That is, looking good “on paper” is one thing, but going to the next level, really INVESTING in God’s Church, shows truly the spiritual health of a parish. The external things have to lead us to the internal things. And taking a leap of faith to truly invest in God’s Church is one of the most important internal things that we do in our spiritual lives, because in this way we live our faith by showing that truly, where our treasure is (invested in God’s Church), there too is our heart (in God’s Church). Understanding that the Church on earth and the Church in heaven are THE SAME CHURCH makes this clear: when we invest here we invest there. Not that we should think we can buy our way into the Heavenly Kingdom, of course! But there is no better place to invest the 10% of the 100% that God gives us … than in our own salvation. God asks us to give to the Church not for HIM, but out of His love for us and His desire for our salvation – something He desires even more than we do.  To be clear: God doesn’t need us or our time, talent, or treasure (on the contrary: it is WE who need HIM) – He only asks us to make this commitment to Him for OUR SALVATION because of His love for us.

Before we get to the fun part (the math below!) we need to cover one more thing. That is, it is scary to tithe. There is no reason to sugar coat this. We are used to relying on ourselves and not on God. This is not good, of course, but it just is what it is. The Lord, however, knows that tithing is not easy for us, so when He instructs us to tithe in the Old Testament (stop – I can hear you thinking right now that we don’t have to tithe because the Lord instructed His people about this in the Old Testament – on the contrary, St. John Chrysostom says that if tithing is for the Old Testament then those who live in the New Testament – Christians – should give even more!) He also gives us a promise:

“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” (Malachi 3:8-10)

As you can see, this is in fact a double promise. The Lord promises to bless us when we do not rob Him – He will give us a blessing that we will not even have room enough (think of barns, harvest, etc.) to receive. And if we do rob Him, well, you can read that more ominous part above again. This, translated in the somewhat softer language of the New Testament, can be found in St. Paul:

“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him…” (I Corinthians 16:2)

AND

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” (II Corinthians 9:7)

If it makes you feel any better, this was obviously a struggle for the nascent Christians in Corinth, otherwise St. Paul wouldn’t have included these admonitions in his letters to them. But St. Paul is concerned here not just with the quantity of Christians, but also the quality of their spiritual lives. That is our concern too. We of course want to keep those metrics above high, but if we bring a million people into the Church, but do not equip them to save their souls, what good have we done?

Now, for the math! The Lord said: “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18). That is, the Church will exist forever: on this earth until the Lord comes again, and unto eternity in the next life. The Devil will work, but he will never truly succeed in destroying the Church. If we think of the Church as a country and the parishes as embassies, the question is not about whether the Church will cease to exist – but we have to make sure that our embassy stays open so that we can continue to issues passports to eternal life in Jesus Christ. This is a good metaphor, and as you consider the math below, it might be helpful to think about our embassy (or “franchise” of the Universal Church) as you do that. Surely no one other than us will answer for whether we kept our embassy open and functioning.

Let us assume that we have 100 giving parishioners (we have 123 adult members this year, but surely some are unable to work). That might be a little high, but 100 is an easy number to divide. Let us further assume that the average salary of those 100 giving parishioners is $52,000 per year after taxes, or $1,000 per week. Again, we choose this number not necessarily for accuracy, but because it is easy to divide and to understand conceptually.

If we multiply 100 by $52,000 we get $5,200,000. In this example this would be the take home pay for our entire parish family.

If we take 10% of $5,200,000 we get $520,000. In this example this would be the tithe for the entire parish, or the annual budget for our parish family.

What this would mean financially for each of those 100 folks is:

$52,000 annual salary
$5,200 annual tithe
$1,000 weekly salary
$100 weekly tithe

Now let’s get more serious. One hundred is the minimum number (given our 123 adult members) of people that should be tithing. But that is not the reality. In fact, the reality is that is more like 25. On one hand that is disappointing, but as you can see by our active parish life, with only 25 people tithing we can do A LOT. Just think what we could do if we really got 100 people tithing! THAT MEANS YOU. And that means us. And that means everyone.

But because, as we noted above, tithing can be scary, and we aren’t quite so presumptuous as to believe that everyone will read this, and that everyone will act as we are encouraging you to do (at least not immediately), let’s look at this with a challenging, but realistic number.

In fact, we think that $52,000 is probably a good surrogate for the average salary of our working and non-working parishioners. So we’ll use that here too. And we think that, since some folks will need to work spiritually on getting to a tithe for a longer time than others (that doesn’t mean the early adopters are better – we are rewarded at the end of the race rather than at the beginning), let’s look at 50 individuals tithing at that rate.

If we multiply $52,000 by 50 we get to $2,600,000. This would make our parish tithe in this example $260,000. The numbers for each person is the same as what we listed above: $100/week/adult. This would give us a super strong financial foundation that would allow us to do things like:

  • Make Fr. Colin a full time priest!
  • Start construction on our new parish church immediately!
  • Create an emergency fund for our parish family in case of family emergency/tragedy!
  • Support our diocese and Archbishop Peter at a much higher rate (10% of our income is sent to the diocese)!
  • Fund more missions in Michigan to spread the Orthodox Faith!

No one is pretending that this is easy. Or that $100 is something that you can throw away every week. But if we give God’s Church $100 every week are we really throwing that away? Or are we hearkening to God’s plea that He gives us for our salvation? If you answer that giving to God’s Church is equivalent to burning money then let’s talk. We want to help you grow spiritually so that you will understand this for what it is: God giving us what is best for our salvation. That is what is most important in this life: that we use the time here that God has given us, be that a long or short life, to prepare ourselves for the next life. How we support God’s Church is PART of that preparation, but it is not an unimportant part. Of the Lord’s parables fully one third of them are about money. So this is something we need to understand, and we need to deal with according to the Church’s teaching. For as in all things, the Church cares first and foremost for our salvation, and teaches us how we can best attain that.

Trusting in God gives us true freedom – freedom that no one or nothing can take away from us. In a way, the Martyrs were in fact the most free of all, for they dedicated their lives to Christ completely and cared not at all for the things of this world. We live in the world, and so we have to, at least on some level, care about the things of this world. Or rather, we are called upon to USE the things of this world (like time, treasure, and talent) for our salvation and the salvation of all. May God grant us all wisdom to understand this fully! If we do, there will never be an issue with finances at STV again, and we will excel at a key parish metric: the quality of the Christians that abide at St. Vladimir’s.

Learn More: Why to Give ~ Learn More: How to Give

Festival Thank You!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE OUR RUSSIAN ORTHODOX FESTIVAL SUCH A HUGE SUCCESS!

“This was great – I can’t wait for next year!”

“We’re so glad you had the festival again!”

“Everything was just wonderful – everyone should come tomorrow!”

Just a few positive pieces of feedback above from those who attended our festival this weekend. The last one was mentioned on Saturday of course. :) We got many, many more such positive pieces of feedback. And thank God for that. Negative feedback was essentially nil. We don’t do politics at STV, and our insistence on that seemed to shine through to our visitors. Some of our detractors had lots to say before the festival, but that didn’t seem to keep folks from coming, having a great time, and being introduced to our Orthodox faith in a positive way.

We named it “Russian Orthodox” this year for a very good reason: the Russian Orthodox Church exists throughout the world and has within it almost every possible nationality, ethnicity, skin color, etc. This was all about the universality of our Orthodox Faith. And it seems this was the right message to send! Because LOTS of folks visited us, many for the first time, and the vast majority were Americans of no particular Orthodox background.

Income was strong. We’ll give you more details when we know them, and especially when we understand all our expenses. We’ll have a meeting with the parish as we always do in this regard. Please be patient – lots of folks who worked all week and moving slowly today. :) And those are the same folks that are going to do the accounting for the festival too.

Volunteer turnout was great! Of course, we hope even more folks from our parish will join in next year, but we had a good turnout from our parishioners, others who are not parishioners, and even several Muslims originally from Russia who felt strongly that they should help us out!

To me the most important metric was this: we had more people at our Church Tours than ever before. It wasn’t even close. Traditionally the first tour, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, is the best attended. Then there are less folks at all other tours, and almost no one at the Sunday 5:00 p.m. tour. NOT THIS YEAR! Every tour, including Vespers on Saturday night, had strong attendance, and the Sunday 5:00 p.m. tour had by far the longest and most dynamic question and answer period of them all! A HUGE thank you to our incredible choir who performed at every tour, plus sang Liturgy early on Sunday morning (to a full church in fact!). It isn’t like people come to the Church Tour to hear Fr. Gregory talk. :) They are they for the choir, and the talking afterwards is our opportunity to engage folks after they have been enveloped our heavenly Orthodox hymnography.

This was a festival like no other in all metrics. We will need to try to figure some of that out of course, so we can do it better next time – we always try to improve year over year. BUT – this was a GREAT FESTIVAL! Perhaps our best ever, even if it didn’t follow past patterns exactly. The pandemic changed lots of things I suppose, but it didn’t change the zeal of our parish family to welcome new people to our campus and to give them a taste of our life at STV, and it didn’t change the interest that those outside our parish family have in us. THIS IS ALL GOOD!

Pictures and videos are going up on our photo album now, and that will take a few days to get everything set. You can see a TON of pictures our Facebook page at this point. And lots of videos there too.

Honestly, I just can’t wait for next year’s festival! Thank you all again for all you did to make our festival a success and our parish family a dynamic expression to our neighbors of our Orthodox Faith!

See you soon at STV!

Archbishop Peter Visit Thank You!

Thank you to all who made Archbishop Peter's visit to STV such a HUGE SUCCESS on Sunday! To those that sang, to those that served, to those that cooked, to those that cleaned, to the large number of folks that came for the work day on Saturday, to those that put up the new sign above our front doors, and to all those that worked quietly in the background and whose labors are known only to God: THANK YOU! Our parish family really shines when we come together to labor for such a project, and we did great work for Archbishop Peter's visit! Let's keep that momentum going as we prepare for our annual festival work work days every Saturday until the festival! More to come on that soon!
